Cigarettes and Harmful Oxygen

Cigarettes are proven to cause harm, whatever the reasons are. Cigarette explosive case in fact also happening on the oxygen therapy users. The combination of cigarettes and oxygen is very dangerous to the smoker. The explosion because of smoking can also happen when someone is doing oxygen therapy. Approximately 1 million of elderly people in America have the equipment of Long Term Oxygen Therapy (LTOH) to overcome chronic lung disease.

Oxygen therapy was first introduced in 1922 as a therapeutic treatment for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The main cause of COPD is cigarettes. The symptoms are including shortness of breath, chronic cough, worsening of activity, and abnormal lung conditions (swollen). Because it was addicted, it is difficult to stop. Despite having chronic lung disease and should receive oxygen therapy, there are still many patients who remains desperate to smoke.

US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that, 5 to 40 percent of people who are doing LTDH therapy are still smoking. Yet the combination of cigarette and oxygen is very dangerous. There are at least 5 deaths and 79 cases which must be treated in the hospital due to explosion of cigarette while doing oxygen therapy since 2000 until 2007.

That is why smoking is prohibited in places that contain a lot of gas such as a gas station. The existence of volatile gases (volatile), including the oxygen in the fuel could trigger an explosion when there is a fire from a cigarette.
